Nansulate® Solar
Insulation for Solar Panels and Solar Water Heater Systems
Nansulate® is the next generation of effective, versatile insulation and is particularly well suited for solar energy systems. It is a clear, paintable insulation coating that has been shown to increase the efficiency of solar thermal panels and solar water heater systems.
Universal Energy Group is utilizing Nansulate® Solar, Nansulate® HomeProtect Clear Coat and Nansulate® EPX on solar hot water heater and solar panel systems to increase heat retention and efficiency of the units. The Stiebel Eltron systems are certified OG300 and qualify for rebate programs in the states of California and Oregon.
Environmentally Friendly
Nansulate® products are water-based, low VOC, and do not contain any toxic ingredients. Nansulate® coatings make a perfect companion for solar thermal systems, because they are considered 'green' technology and increase efficiency of heat retention for solar thermal systems.
Why Solar Water Heater Systems are So Important
Solar water heaters typically consume between 50%-70% less energy than a standard gas or electric tank water heater, according to the Solar Rating & Certification Corp. Water heating is the second most energy-intensive activity in the home, just behind HVAC.
California's Solar Hot Water and Efficiency Act of 2007 has created a goal of installing 200,000 solar water heaters in the state by 2017. Hawaii became the first state to require solar water heaters in all new homes with a bill signed into law by Governor Linda Lingle that requires the energy-saving systems in homes starting in 2010.
How Nansulate® Is Incorporated into a Solar Water Heater System
The panel incorporates 9 coats of Nansulate® Solar (each coat applied between 72-127 microns) with a total Dry Film Thickness (DFT) of approximately 500 microns on the interior panel case. The area directly beneath the top glass panel has 3 coats of Nansulate® HomeProtect Clear Coat with total DFT of approximately 175 microns.
Nansulate® Solar is also used on the water heater piping for insulation and to reduce surface temperature. This can be done at anywhere between 3 to 12 coats total (depending upon desired end result). Nansulate® Solar is also used on the exterior of the water tank to provide insulation and corrosion resistance, and can be over coated with Nansulate® EPX if desired to increase thermal insulation.
Nansulate® Solar Product Details
Thermal conductivity, k, is the intensive property of a material that indicates its ability to conduct heat. The lower the thermal conductivity number, the better the insulator. The low thermal conductivity of Nansulate and the nanomaterial (Hydro-NM-Oxide - 0.017 W/mK) contained in Nansulate is what makes it an excellent insulator. Nansulate coatings when fully cured consist of over 70% by volume of Hydro-NM-Oxide.
1 gallon covers approximately 150-175 sq ft of surface area with the recommended minimum three coats of Nansulate required for thermal protection. Actual coverage rate may vary depending on surface texture.
